Archipel are making the generous videogame documentaries on YouTube

Most videogame documentaries investigate cross-take a look at enjoy early ’00s webcomics. There’s in general a sofa, some speaking heads, presumably the occasional setting up shot of a building, to will allow you to attain that the sofa is interior a building. Archipel is something else fully. A YouTube channel dedicated to setting up documentaries about Eastern artists and creators, it has raised the bar – and largely factual by making people accelerate outdoors.

I’ve been watching Archipel for a couple of years now, but I was triggered to write this post by the stellar final episode of their Caravan sequence. It facets Isamu Kamikokuryo, art director of more than one Final Fantasy video games, taking the viewer on a tour of some of the locations that inspired him at some stage in his profession.

You don’t hear the documentary makers at any level, factual Kamikokuryo as he reflects on his profession, his life, his work on Final Fantasy, his preference to head freelance in 2017, and his relationship to the striking and ravishing locations he takes you.

It’s essential to perchance investigate cross-take a look at it for the relax landscape pictures alone.

It will were a lot simpler to build Kamikokuryo in a chair and simply quiz him questions with the camera pointed at him, and quite a lot of other Archipel videos compose work this plot. However thru these travels with Kamikokuryo, we receive a more intimate portrait of him as a person, and of the true inspirations underpinning his work.

There are several other episodes within the Caravan sequence, including these that comprises Shinji Mikami, the director of Resident Gruesome 1 and 4, and quite a lot of more. If the tone of it all sounds a dinky bit portentous to your tastes despite the true fact that, they enjoy got an older sequence that more progressively bought creatives some distance from their work stations. Called Toco Toco, it in general had sport designers lead a merry tour of some of their favorite locations at one some distance more lighthearted plod, a lot like in this video in which Swery65 rushes you from one bar to 1 other in Tokyo:

Archipel’s videos are all advert free and funded via Patreon, with rewards for supporting including Discord receive entry to, interview transcripts, and your name within the credits.
